Ultimately the answer to the big ball of mud is probably as simple as, "That's how we were built, so that's how we build; that's how evolution works (and our machinations can never be removed therefrom.)" You realize, of course, that the more I use this comments feature the guiltier I feel about not having yet got them going at my place (my childish rants of frustration notwithstanding.)
