The World is Not Ready for the Semantic Web

And it probably never will be, as the continued rise of folksonomy, informal metadata, and lightweight metadata structures demonstrates. Maintaining that because tagging and social software are popular means the world is ready for (or wants) a semantic web is like saying that because people try to make their clothes work together they are ready for a national uniform.

Ultimately the answer to the big ball of mud is probably as simple as, “That’s how we were built, so that’s how we build; that’s how evolution works (and our machinations can never be removed therefrom.)”

    You realize, of course, that the more I use this comments feature the guiltier I feel about not having yet got them going at my place (my childish rants of frustration notwithstanding.)
