Technorati Tag Experiment

I wonder if Technorati is using the RSS feeds, when available for sites, and that’s why my Technorati tags are being ignored? I’ll try a couple of tags in this message body and see.

Update: This is indeed the case: Technorati uses the RSS feeds and reads the tags from the body of the message– so the plugins that add content which is only displayed in the visual pages (like the Textpattern plugin) won’t feed the Technorati tag engine.

Thanks for passing along your observation, Chris. This would explain why the T-Bot is ignoring tags in my own home-grown blog thing.

I’ve also reconsidered my position: Technorati Tags aren’t useless because tagging is useful, and if TTags encourage more people out there to annotate their web content with tags, that’s good for tagging in general. I just hope that better standards for annotation will evolve, as the rel=”tag” hack is pretty specific to Technorati.

Or perhaps rel=”tag” will become the defacto standard and start being used to create more connections… one can dream :)
