Second Life Resources from Dr. Ed Lamoureux

Continuing Second Life day, I want to refer readers to many interesting materials by Dr. Ed Lamoureux on Second Life and New Media. Some of the items I am currently enjoying:

  • From the 2006 NMC Regional Conferece, PPT slides for his talk on Teaching Undergraduate Research in Second Life: Opportunities, Challenges, and Plans. Here Lamoureux discusses his SL course on Field Research with particular attention to the mechanics and some SL affordances. The list of SL sites on Slide 17, with links new to me such as the From Where I Hover blog. Yep, a blog!
  • For the NMC Campus Observer, Dr. Lamoureux wrote a three part series on Preparing to Teach an Undergraduate Course in Second Life. I think I’ll be making this required reading for our innovative instructors who are thinking about using SL for delivery.
  • Of the course notes on his web site, those for MM 250 – Intro to New Media Theory are perhaps the most interesting. Pulling instead of pushing? Fear of fragmentation? Do those sound familiar?

Just be sure that if you attend Dr. Lamoureux’s classes you don’t chew tobacco, let your mailbox get full, or use your laptop for anything other than taking notes or displaying course materials. Otherwise the Dr. will be angry. You don’t want to make the Dr. angry. I love those real-world teaching mannerisms… my own weakness being cell phone users talking in class…

Sadly, after too brief an email dalliance, Dr. Ed and I have parted ways (none too amicably from his perspective). For the record, I have documented the whole exchange including links to my initial posts. Judge for yourself. In the meantime, even if you stop reading here, keep an eye on Dr. Ed’s materials. Much good stuff.
