More Twittering
I was talking about it a while back, but now others including Alan and D’Arcy are starting to take notice of the potential of Twitter. I’m curious how they’ll take to it over a longer period of time.
I was a bit intrigued at first, relating it to the way a company I used to work for used IM as their de facto in/out board. My skepticism kicked in at the lack of control, tempered by realizing that many applications succeed which I geekily think are too simple.
What really fascinates me is Twitter as a creative tool. D’arcy’s term “nanoblogging” is apt. Some people feel compelled to create narrative with their allotment of bits. Even back when I was using my IM name as a note to others in the company I felt an irresistible pull to tell stories and make jokes with it, including multi-part sequences. Twitter is perfect for that. I’d have a lot of fun with it if I were still teaching writing classes!
I don’t see much hope of using it organizationally as Cole does, given internal resistance to IM… for that to work for me, though, I’d have to have some kind of “groups” capability. As it is, the Stirman community can get a little wonky between truly public messages and the residue of Twitters that are remnants of one side of an otherwise private conversation…

I’m still on the excited new addict path. There is something just electric about the immediacy and pure connectedness of it, but I’d bet half a paycheck I’ll be twittering less in a few weeks.
Groups idea is rather solid. I think I’;; twitter it http://twitter.com/cogdog/
