Hey Alan, you actually posted my first session proposal draft, the one you (thankfully) talked me out of...

I had meant to write a short response to Jeffrey's points, which were certainly sincere and thoughtful -- and, best of all, provocative. Chris, much of what you express is how I would have hoped to respond, but far, far more elegantly.

And I'll admit that the abstract that got published in the conference program did not describe what actually happened very accurately. I honestly didn't know what was going to happen until it happened.

Alan-- I didn't mean to imply that NMCs description was faulty or that there was anything wrong (I have no idea what the description meant)! I was thinking more of the expectations that people bring to conferences and symposiums. Kind of like when chicken is on the menu, we all think conference chicken regardless of description... and then what happens when the chicken is something totally new and good? :)

I do agree 100% with Jeffrey that you reflected very profoundly in this most unusual session. If art disturbs a person, than it is more effective then if makes one shrug ,"ehhhh".

That said, there was nothing in the session description that implied this was a "how to" session, though in fact, I am not sure exactly what the description meant (and I read a draft of it):

The promise of "mashups for the masses" has so far proven to be a filthy lie. What are the existing technical and cultural issues that have thus far kept mashed up content and data on the fringes of web activity? Can we avoid the dread peril of “Frankencontent”, de-contextualized flows of information that are useful to nobody except spambloggers? This session will strive to complement the other NMC online sessions toward constructive responses to these challenges.

Had it not been at the end of a long day, it would have been valuable to have a way for people to group process this. Guess thats what blogs are for ;-)

Nice to see you groovin there Chris and keeping the backchannel lively in the other sessions.

Chris, this was the most thoughtful post I have read on the Mashup sessions. I really appreciate your sharing your own reflection on them. I think this sort of individual and then collective debriefing is what helps move our knowledge base, field, and professions along.
