Blogs, Boards, and Distributed Discussion
At the AAPT presentation yesterday I was asked a set of questions that repeatedly comes up when discussing blogs in education: How do they compare to discussion boards? How do you keep track of the conversation? How do you make sure everyone participates? These are natural questions with sound answers based on experience, though the last indicates the kind of false premise that permeates a lot of discussion about social software and other communication tools.
The answers in brief: generally they work better for the kind of discussion most educators seem to be looking for, RSS, and you don’t (and don’t want to). But I’m going to give somewhat more elaborate answers in the next three posts (separated so I can reference them a bit easier in the future).
